Humanities deals with human life and human experience qualitatively. Humanities investigates how

do human beings behave? Why do they behave this way? How do human beings interact with each

other? How do human beings interpret the world around them? And What kind of political, social and

cultural institutions do they form?

The field of humanities include Modern languages, Classical languages, Linguistics, Literature,

History, Jurisprudence, Philosophy, Archaeology, Comparative religion, Ethics, History, criticism and

theory of the arts, Journalism, Psychology, Political science and such subject areas.

Bachelor of Arts programme in Journalism, English and Psychology offered by School of Arts and

Humanities at REVA UNIVERSITY intends to develop English language skills and Journalism as a

profession amongst its students.

Journalism is all about collecting information and disseminating the facts and figures to the public via

print, television and Internet. Journalists present the news in a manner that is useful, informative and

thought-provoking. Journalism careers include reporter, feature writer, intern, sub editor, designer,

proof reader, news reader, news presenter, news analyst, news editor, editor and many such. The

language skills and understanding psychology of people helps a Journalist to gain expertise in his/her

profession.

As per the data available with the Government, a total of 1, 05,443 newspapers/periodicals are

registered with the Registrar of Newspapers for India as on 31st March, 2015. There are more than

120 TV News channels and in addition there are huge opportunities to write blogs and news on

internet. There are thousands of opportunities in corporate sector for compiling corporate news and

publication. The media and entertainment sector is expected to cross Rs. 2 trillion by 2020 at a CAGR

of 11.6%.

In this context, an undergraduate University Programme offered by REVA UNIVERSITY in

Journalism, English and Psychology is relevant to meet the future human resources requirement of

News and Media enterprises.

The programme focusses on Journalism, media studies, psychology, critical theory, English language

and literature, in addition to various transferable skills particularly writing skills that are required for

successful career development in Journalism.

Career poor

Journalism as a career is an attractive option for youngsters especially for those who have a flair for

writing and communication and wish to do something for the society. Journalism is not just about

writing, it is also about reading and most importantly, the ability to express one’s thoughts on varied

topics.

There are different categories in which the media industry can be divided — print and electronic. As

the name suggests , everything that is printed comes under print media, which includes newspapers,

magazines, journals, tabloids, dailies and books. On the other hand, electronic media includes content

on television , radio and the internet. With changes in the society , even this field has undergone a

radical change. A journalist has to cover stories/features on various aspects of life i.e. political,

financial , leisure, crime, sports, entertainment, spiritual, educational , infrastructure, technological ,

medical, and so on. Not to forget, along with the newspapers , there has been an increase in the

number of magazines too. Specialized magazines are available in the field of fashion, beauty, family,

for youth, travel, medical, technological , lifestyle, education, sports, etc. They can be in many

languages. Some of the work opportunities are in the areas of advertising agencies; educational

institutes , magazines, news papers, portals/websites of publications , publishing houses, radio

channels as well as television channels. While there are opportunities in this field, it is a competitive

field. Therefore, one has to perform at the highest level and be able to work under difficult situations.

However , if one persists with hard work and passion, a career in journalism can be a fulfilling and

lucrative option.

Campus placement, in today’s digital age, is simply overrated. Yet, most students have the same

obsolete mentality inherited from the previous generation of job seekers.

Today’s media world is so diverse and exciting, that getting a job is not that difficult. Indian media is

growing and there will not be any shortage of jobs in near future.

That being said, I would suggest, instead of taking a “I need to find a job” approach cultivate a “I must

grow my career” approach. Your life will take a different and eventually a better path that way.

Christ university placement record, for that matter, is superb. I had visited it in 2015 with my students

as part of a study tour (disclaimer: our institution, St. Aloysius College, Mangalore belongs to same

group of Jesuit institutions as XIC, Mumbai, Xaviers Kolkata, Loyola Chennai etc.).

The faculty and non teaching staff are very friendly and student focused. The curriculum is world

class, the campus is stunning and the facilities are state-of-the-art. And best part is, it’s in the prime

part of Mumbai. So do not fret, go for it.

Good luck with your efforts and may god be with you in all your success.
